Dragon 7 is a side bet in baccarat that pays 40 to 1 when the Banker wins with exactly three cards totalling 7. “Dragon bet” also names a different side bet, Dragon Bonus, with different rules. This guide covers both and calculates the house edge of Dragon 7: about 7.6% with a 40 to 1 payout and 8 decks.

The key difference is the winning condition. A Banker total of 7 alone does not qualify for Dragon 7: the Banker must have three cards and win the hand. Dragon Bonus checks different conditions. Start with the full side bet name and its paytable rather than assuming that every Dragon bet works the same way.

## What is Dragon 7?

Dragon 7 is an optional side bet in EZ Baccarat, a baccarat variant without the usual 5% commission on Banker wins. It settles separately from the main wager, but the rules allow it only for players who have placed a main wager on Player or Banker.

No commission does not mean that every Banker win pays the main Banker bet. In EZ Baccarat, a Banker win with three cards totalling 7 makes that main bet push: the stake returns without a profit. A Dragon 7 side bet on the same hand pays 40 to 1.

That exception replaces the commission on Banker wins. The cards follow the baccarat drawing rules, and each wager then receives its own result.

The payout, Banker push and tie settlement appear in the [EZ Baccarat rules published by the California Bureau of Gambling Control](https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/agweb/pdfs/gambling/BGC_ez_baccarat.pdf). The outcome table below describes that variant, not every table offering a similarly named bet.

## When does Dragon 7 win?

Dragon 7 wins only when the Banker draws a third card, finishes with 7 and beats the Player. Every other result loses the side bet, including a 7–7 tie.

| Outcome | Dragon 7 | Main Banker bet | Main Player bet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker wins with three cards totalling 7 | Wins 40 to 1 | Push | Loses |
| Banker wins with two cards totalling 7 | Loses | Wins | Loses |
| Banker wins with any other total, or with three cards not totalling 7 | Loses | Wins | Loses |
| Player wins | Loses | Loses | Wins |
| Tie with both sides on 7 | Loses | Push | Push |
| Any tie other than 7–7 | Loses | Push | Push |
| A hand with a natural: 8 or 9 on the first two cards | Loses | Wins if Banker wins; pushes on a tie; otherwise loses | Wins if Player wins; pushes on a tie; otherwise loses |

The second row specifically requires a Banker win: two cards totalling 7 do not determine the winner by themselves. Likewise, a three-card Banker total of 7 cannot win Dragon 7 if the Player also has 7 or has a higher total.

A natural is a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards. It cannot satisfy the Dragon 7 condition. For the deal order and the rules that determine who draws, see [baccarat rules: the deal and the third card](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/how-to-play-baccarat).

## How do you place it?

Place the main wager first, then place the Dragon 7 side bet. Under the EZ Baccarat rules, the side bet is available to a player who has already placed a main wager on Player or Banker.

The practical sequence is:

1. Confirm that the table offers EZ Baccarat with Dragon 7.
2. Check the side bet’s payout and permitted stake.
3. Place your main wager.
4. Place a separate wager on Dragon 7.
5. After the hand, check the main wager and side bet results separately.

Do not treat the two stakes as a single wager. When the Banker wins with three cards totalling 7, a main Banker bet returns while Dragon 7 wins. If your main wager was on Player, it loses on that same hand.

A side bet has its own settlement rather than rewriting the main bet’s rules. That distinction also helps when learning about [the Banker Streak side bet](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/banker-streak-baccarat-side-bet), although its winning conditions do not apply to Dragon 7.

## How much does it pay, and what does the casino keep?

At 40 to 1 with 8 decks, Dragon 7 has a house edge of about 7.6% and a winning probability of 2.25%. The payout makes the larger difference here: increasing it to 43 to 1 lowers the house edge to 0.9%.

A 2.25% winning probability means about one win in 44.4 hands, or roughly one in 44. That is a long-run frequency, not a schedule that requires a win after a set number of losses.

The [exact Dragon 7 calculation by Eliot Jacobson, published on Wizard of Odds](https://wizardofodds.com/games/baccarat/dragon-bet/) lists 112,633,011,329,024 winning combinations and 4,885,765,264,174,330 losing combinations for 8 decks. Its exact house edge is 7.611%; this guide uses 7.6% as the rounded figure.

Our simulation of 20,000,000 hands produced 7.7%, with a standard error of 0.14 percentage points (pp). The 6-deck simulation produced 7.64% with the same standard error. The gap between deck counts is smaller than that error, so the simulation cannot separate them; moving the payout from 40 to 1 to 43 to 1 changes the edge far more.

The table values are recalculated from Wizard’s exact counts, not from the simulation.

| Dragon 7 payout | House edge |
|---|---:|
| 30 to 1 | 30.1% |
| 40 to 1 | 7.6% |
| 43 to 1 | 0.9% |

The break-even payout, from Wizard’s exact counts, is 43.38 to 1. Under these assumptions, a 40 to 1 payout leaves the casino with an edge of about 7.6%; a lower payout increases that edge. This conclusion applies to the Dragon 7 winning condition and payouts examined here.

The house edge is not a fee deducted from every stake. On an individual hand, the side bet either loses or pays. The percentage describes the average loss relative to the total amount wagered over the long run.

## What does a \$5 bet look like?

A winning \$5 Dragon 7 bet at 40 to 1 earns \$200 profit, with the original stake returned separately. Under the same 8-deck, 40 to 1 assumptions, the expected loss is \$0.38 per bet, or \$38 across 100 bets.

Those figures describe two different things:

- **A winning hand:** \$200 profit from Dragon 7, plus the return of the stake.
- **The average across many bets:** an expected loss of \$0.38 for each \$5 wager.

The expected-loss amounts are rounded. The \$38 figure is an average, not a typical result for one session of 100 bets. Actual results can vary widely because a rare payout makes a large difference to the total.

The main wager is not included in the \$200 profit. A main Banker bet pushes when Dragon 7 occurs. A main Player bet loses, so that loss must be counted separately when working out the result of the whole hand.

The example also assumes equal \$5 stakes. If the amount changes from hand to hand, the \$38 figure cannot simply be applied to that sequence: it describes 100 bets of the stated size.

## How is Dragon Bonus different?

Dragon Bonus is a separate optional side bet in mini-baccarat. It wins when the selected side wins with a natural, or wins without a natural by at least four points. A natural winner pays even money, and a natural tie pushes.

A natural tie means 8–8 or 9–9 on the first two cards. In that case, the Dragon Bonus stake returns. This differs from Dragon 7, which loses on any tie.

These conditions appear in the [Dragon Bonus rules published by the Washington State Gambling Commission](https://wsgc.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2025-01/Dragon%20Bonus%20Rules%20Updated%20with%20ETG%20Tribal%20Only%20for%20Posting%2007-19-2024.pdf). The margin-based payout schedule is not reproduced here; the Dragon 7 figures do not apply to it.

The simplest comparison is the question each bet asks. Dragon 7 checks whether the Banker won with three cards totalling 7. Dragon Bonus checks whether the selected side won with a natural or by a sufficient margin. Similar names do not make the wagers interchangeable.

## What about Fortune 7 and other names?

Fortune 7 in 5 Treasures pays for the same winning combination: a Banker win with three cards totalling 7. That shared condition does not automatically carry every EZ Baccarat settlement rule over to another table.

The [5 Treasures side bets](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/5-treasures-baccarat) guide explains its context. Check the table’s paytable and main-wager settlement before treating it as equivalent to Dragon 7.

Other names are not covered here because there is no verified primary source for them. If a table displays only a shortened name, ask for the full rules rather than relying on the word Dragon.

## Can you count cards for Dragon 7?

Card counting is theoretically possible for Dragon 7, but Eliot Jacobson, whose analysis Wizard publishes, does not regard it as a practical threat to the game because of its high variance and low return. Counting offers no promise of profit.

Sensitivity to the remaining cards is not the same as a practical way to earn money. Rare wins create large swings, so one successful run does not establish that an approach works.

Counting cards also differs from watching the sequence of Banker and Player wins. Past outcomes alone do not predict the next hand, a distinction explored in [the 1000-shoe baccarat analysis](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/1000-baccarat-shoes-analysis). A long stretch without Dragon 7 does not make a win due.

## What should you check before you bet?

Check five things: the payout, baccarat variant, main Banker bet settlement, betting limits and full side bet name. Together, they establish whether this guide’s figures apply to the table.

- **Paytable:** Does Dragon 7 actually pay 40 to 1? A different payout changes the house edge.
- **Variant:** Is this EZ Baccarat or regular baccarat? Verify the Banker exception rather than assuming it applies.
- **Main Banker bet:** How do the rules settle it when the Banker wins with three cards totalling 7?
- **Minimum and maximum:** What stakes are permitted specifically for the side bet? Main-wager limits are not a substitute.
- **Name:** Is it Dragon 7, Fortune 7 or Dragon Bonus? Fortune 7 shares Dragon 7’s winning combination, but the full settlement rules still need checking; Dragon Bonus uses a different winning condition.

## What are the limits of the calculation?

The main calculation covers one hand with 8 decks and a Dragon 7 payout of 40 to 1; the 6-deck result comes from a separate simulation. Individual tables may use different rules.

One hand here means one settlement of the side bet. The Dragon 7 house edge excludes the main wager’s result, and the worked example does not describe the combined return of both bets. A whole visit’s result therefore cannot be compared directly with the Dragon 7 percentage.

Our [baccarat simulator](https://toolsgambling.com/casino/baccarat-simulator) tests the main bets only; Dragon 7 is not modelled there. It cannot verify this side bet’s winning frequency or house edge.

## FAQ

### Must my main wager be on Banker to place Dragon 7?

No. Dragon 7 needs a main wager on Player or Banker; a Tie alone is not enough, and the main wager does not have to be Banker. Each bet then settles on its own terms.

### Can Dragon 7 pay on a 7–7 tie?

No. The Banker’s 7 must win the hand; matching the Player’s total does not qualify.

### Does 40 to 1 include the returned stake?

No. It expresses profit relative to the stake. The winning stake returns separately.

### Does the 7.6% house edge apply to Dragon Bonus?

No. Its different winning conditions and paytable require a separate calculation.

### Can I test Dragon 7 in the ToolsGambling simulator?

No. The available baccarat simulator supports main wagers, not Dragon 7.
