Buffalo Gold Collection is an Aristocrat slot in which scatter coins trigger free games and gold buffalo heads transform other animal symbols into buffalo for the rest of the bonus round. This guide explains Collection mechanics using the official Loto-Québec rule sheet, then calculates expected loss using a separate RTP example published by OLG.

This guide is for adults who meet their jurisdiction’s legal gambling age. It explains the game rather than promising wins.

## Which Buffalo Gold version are you playing?

Check the full title first: Buffalo Gold Collection, Buffalo Gold Revolution and Buffalo Gold Cash Collection are separate games, and their bonus rules are not interchangeable.

[Aristocrat describes Collection](https://www.aristocratgaming.com/us/games/us-buffalo-gold-collection) as a game with free games and transformations of premium animal symbols. The detailed mechanics below come from the [Loto-Québec rule sheet](https://portail.assets.lotoquebec.com/ressources/assets/v3/assets/blt8296e79a7001648c/blt7a40aa834309ad26/6a20628ccaae46d4befb1180/Buffalo_Gold_Collection_rules_en.pdf), not from assumptions about the entire family.

| Item | Verified fact | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Collection provider | Aristocrat | Does not establish each operator’s settings |
| Free-games trigger | 3, 4 or 5 coins award 8, 15 or 20 free games | Loto-Québec rules |
| Gold buffalo head collection | Thresholds of 4, 7, 13 and 15 convert four animal types | Within the current bonus round |
| OLG RTP | 95.5% | Separate Ontario Collection listing |
| OLG stake range | CAD 0.60–30 | Not a universal range |

[Buffalo Gold Revolution](https://www.aristocratgaming.com/us/games/us-buffalo-gold-revolution) features a jackpot wheel and, separately, wild multipliers. [Buffalo Gold Cash Collection](https://www.aristocratgaming.com/us/games/us-buffalo-gold-cash-collection) advertises three bonus types. Those features do not automatically apply to Collection.

Original Buffalo and similarly named games are also not interchangeable. Max Power is a separate version; its specifications are not used here. A shared buffalo theme does not establish identical rules, payout tables or RTP.

## What do the base-game symbols do?

The buffalo is a paying symbol, the sunset is a wild, the coin is a scatter that triggers free games, and the gold buffalo head is a collection symbol used in the bonus round.

Keep their roles separate:

- **Buffalo symbols** form paying combinations.
- **Sunset wilds** substitute for other symbols, subject to the rules’ exclusions.
- **Scatter coins** trigger and extend free games.
- **Gold buffalo heads** accumulate during the bonus round and change the animal symbols. They are not coins.

### How do ways differ from paylines?

Ways count qualifying combinations of positions across reels rather than only predefined paylines.

For illustration, a full 5×4 grid has five reels with four positions each. It offers 4⁵ = 1024 potential positional paths. That is **not a win probability**, nor does it establish that every Buffalo Gold version uses the same reel layout.

In another hypothetical example, a matching symbol occupies two positions on the first reel, three on the second and one on the third. That produces 2 × 3 × 1 = 6 matching paths across those three reels. Whether they pay depends on the actual game’s combination rules. This counts paths; it does not calculate expected value.

### How do coin size and total stake differ?

Coin size, or denomination, is the monetary value of one credit unit; total stake is the cost of a paid spin. They are different amounts.

For example, 60 credits at a coin size of CAD 0.01 produce a total stake of CAD 0.60. This is hypothetical arithmetic, not a required setting on every machine.

Page 1 of the Loto-Québec rule sheet says payout amounts are multiplied by the active **Coin Size**. However, the numerical payout table in the source PDF is blurred, so reconstructing exact payouts would be unreliable. Check the readable payout table, coin size and total stake in the actual game. See the [slot denomination guide](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/slot-denomination-strategy) for more on this distinction.

## How do coins trigger and extend free games?

In the Loto-Québec version, three coins award 8 free games, four award 15, and five award 20. During free games, two coins add another 5.

| Coins triggering the feature | Initial free games |
|---|---:|
| 3 | 8 |
| 4 | 15 |
| 5 | 20 |

The feature can retrigger. The bet and reel settings remain those used to trigger it. These conditions appear on pages 2–3 of the [Loto-Québec rule sheet](https://portail.assets.lotoquebec.com/ressources/assets/v3/assets/blt8296e79a7001648c/blt7a40aa834309ad26/6a20628ccaae46d4befb1180/Buffalo_Gold_Collection_rules_en.pdf).

*Loto-Québec source: original English rule sheet, accessed 2026-10-13; document date unspecified.*

## What do gold buffalo heads do?

Gold buffalo heads progressively convert eagles, mountain lions, wolves and elk into ordinary buffalo symbols for the remaining free games in the current round.

| Gold buffalo heads collected | Additional animal type converted into buffalo |
|---|---|
| 4 | Eagle |
| 7 | Mountain lion |
| 13 | Wolf |
| 15 | Elk |

The upgrades are cumulative. At 7 heads, for example, eagles and mountain lions have been converted, while wolves and elk remain. Collected gold heads become ordinary buffalo for the remaining free games. This does not mean that a symbol stays locked in a visible position on the screen.

At 15 heads, all four listed animal types have been converted. This **does not mean** letters, wilds or scatters disappear from the grid. The rule sheet also does not specify a fixed prize, jackpot or extra free game for reaching that threshold.

![English rule-sheet excerpt showing gold buffalo head thresholds of 4 for eagle, 7 for mountain lion, 13 for wolf and 15 for elk](https://toolsgambling.com/media/article/2026/10/f318a83b1abb3a872b69af61c9903cec.webp)

*Loto-Québec source: original English rule sheet, accessed 2026-10-13; document date unspecified.*

These conversions are described on page 3 of the [rule sheet](https://portail.assets.lotoquebec.com/ressources/assets/v3/assets/blt8296e79a7001648c/blt7a40aa834309ad26/6a20628ccaae46d4befb1180/Buffalo_Gold_Collection_rules_en.pdf). It does not provide the probability of collecting 15 heads, an average bonus wait or confirmation that collection carries over between separate bonus rounds.

## How do wilds and multipliers work?

In this version, wilds appear on reels 2, 3 and 4. During free games, a sunset carrying a 2× or 3× multiplier multiplies the **total spin win**.

Page 2 describes wild substitution excluding scatters; gold buffalo heads are also excluded during the bonus. Substitution, including multiplier-wild substitution, is possible in the paid base game of this build too: wilds are not exclusively bonus symbols.

The free-games rule applies to the **total payout for the spin**, not just combinations containing a wild.

If three multipliers apply together, illustrative products are:

- 2 × 3 × 3 = 18, giving an 18× multiplier;
- 3 × 3 × 3 = 27, giving a 27× multiplier.

These examples demonstrate multiplication, not the maximum win for the whole game, session or bonus round. The monetary payout depends on the underlying spin win and the version’s rules.

## What is Buffalo Gold Collection’s RTP?

OLG’s public Buffalo Gold Collection listing states 95.5% RTP and a stake range of CAD 0.60–30. This is an Ontario operator example, not a universal setting for Buffalo Gold games.

The [OLG listing](https://www.olg.ca/en/casino/play-buffalo-gold-collection.html) was checked on 2026-10-13. It and the Loto-Québec rule sheet are separate sources; together, they do not prove that both operators use an identical mathematical build. Only OLG’s public information was checked, without signing in or opening the game.

**RTP is the theoretical long-term share of betting turnover returned to players.** At 95.5% RTP, the house edge is 100% − 95.5% = 4.5%. RTP is not a hit rate or a promise to return 95.5% of your deposit during one session. This interpretation follows the [Gambling Commission’s RTP explanation](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/licensees-and-businesses/guide/page/how-to-calculate-return-to-player-rtp).

No universal volatility score, bonus frequency or full maximum win has been verified for all versions. A higher nominal stake does not itself establish higher RTP. The [RTP versus volatility guide](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/rtp-vs-volatility-slots) explains why return and variation in results are different concepts.

A long wait does not make a bonus “due.” Previous outcomes do not identify a “hot” machine or predict a 15-head collection.

## How do you calculate expected loss over 100 spins?

At CAD 0.60 per spin, 100 paid spins and an assumed 95.5% RTP produce CAD 60 in turnover, CAD 2.70 in expected loss and CAD 57.30 in expected gross return.

To enter this scenario, open the [RTP calculator](https://toolsgambling.com/casino/rtp-calculator):

1. Set the RTP slider to **95.5**.
2. Enter **0.6** in the stake field.
3. Select **“By spins”**.
4. Enter **100** in the number-of-spins field.
5. Read the calculated turnover, house edge, expected loss and expected return.

When checked, the `/rtp` catalog filter returned 0 results for Buffalo Gold. This example therefore uses manual RTP entry; it does not depend on selecting an exact game from the catalog.

*Local interface capture: calculator inputs for a CAD scenario. The interface uses a generic currency symbol.*

The calculation is:

- Turnover: 0.60 × 100 = **CAD 60**.
- House edge: 100% − 95.5% = **4.5%**.
- Expected loss: 60 × 0.045 = **CAD 2.70**.
- Expected gross return: 60 × 0.955 = **CAD 57.30**.

![English calculator results showing turnover of 60, house edge of 4.5%, expected loss of 2.70 and expected return of 57.30](https://toolsgambling.com/media/article/2026/10/55050d6b4f89c425ca2e89368b527ae2.webp)

*Local interface capture: results for 100 paid spins. Amounts in this example are treated as CAD.*

The CAD 57.30 return includes returned stakes; it is **not net profit**. These figures are mathematical expectations, not a session forecast. The calculation assumes a fixed stake, full-game RTP of 95.5% and no extra fees. Monetary results are rounded to two decimal places.

If the interface displays “Below average,” that is its classification, not an independent quality rating of the game.

### What changes when the stake increases?

With the same RTP and number of paid spins, expected loss increases in proportion to the stake.

| Stake, CAD | Paid spins | Turnover, CAD | Expected loss at 95.5% RTP, CAD |
|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| 0.60 | 100 | 60 | 2.70 |
| 1.20 | 100 | 120 | 5.40 |
| 3 | 100 | 300 | 13.50 |

Full-game RTP already includes feature returns. Count **100 paid spins**; do not add awarded free spins as extra paid turnover.

Your deposit and betting turnover are not the same. Rewagering payouts increases turnover even without another deposit. You therefore cannot simply multiply a deposit by 4.5% and call the result the expected loss for an entire session.

## What should you check before playing?

Before placing a bet, verify the exact version, its actual rules and an affordable loss limit. The name Buffalo Gold alone is not enough.

- **Confirm the full title, provider and version.** Do not transfer Collection rules to Revolution, Cash Collection or Max Power.
- **Open the help screen or game information.** Button names vary; no specific game client was tested for this guide.
- **Read the payout table.** Check the coin size, total stake, feature eligibility, free-games rules and declared RTP.
- **Check local availability.** Confirm that you meet the legal age and operator requirements. OLG’s public listing is not a recommendation to access it from another jurisdiction.
- **Set time and loss limits in advance.** Choose an amount you can afford to lose, and do not raise it to chase losses.
- **Use a demo only to learn the controls and rules.** It cannot measure RTP or predict real-money outcomes.

Neither account-based play nor demo play was tested here. Do not assume every simulator matches the rules and settings of the version you want.

If your main question is whether a strategy can deliver consistent wins, read the [guide to Buffalo wins and strategy limitations](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/how-to-win-buffalo-slot-machine). Understanding symbols and expected costs can support better decisions, but it does not remove the house edge.

## FAQ

### Do 15 gold buffalo heads guarantee a big win?

No. Under the Loto-Québec rules, that threshold converts four animal types into buffalo for the remaining free games. The rules do not specify a fixed prize, jackpot or extra free game for reaching 15 heads.

### Does the head collection carry over between separate bonuses?

The rule sheet describes collection within the current bonus round. It does not establish that progress carries over to a separate bonus. Check the help screen for any other version.

### Does every Buffalo Gold version have 95.5% RTP?

No. OLG lists 95.5% for Buffalo Gold Collection in Ontario. That figure does not establish the settings of every title in the family or every operator’s version.

### Can a demo verify RTP or predict real-money results?

No. A demo can help you understand controls and rules, but a short run cannot measure theoretical RTP or guarantee similar real-money results. Whether its version and settings match must be checked separately.
