A wagering requirement is the amount of qualifying betting you must complete before bonus-related funds can become withdrawable under an offer’s terms. The basic calculation is **wagering basis × wagering multiplier = required credited wagering**.

For example, a 100 USD bonus with a 35× requirement on the bonus creates a target of 3,500 USD in credited wagering. This is a hypothetical example, not a current offer. All 35× examples in this guide are hypothetical and do not represent current rules for licensed bonus promotions in Great Britain.

Turnover means total stakes, not payouts. If a qualifying 10 USD stake returns 18 USD, a game with 100% contribution credits 10 USD towards wagering, not 18 USD. Returned funds can be staked again if the terms permit.

You can check the figures in the [ToolsGambling wagering calculator](https://toolsgambling.com/casino/wagering-calculator). The walkthrough below gives the exact settings and explains what its results mean.

> **Turnover is not a required loss**
>
> A 3,500 USD wagering target does not mean you must lose 3,500 USD or deposit that much new money. It refers to qualifying stakes credited towards the requirement. Your starting balance may still run out before completion: staking winnings again does not remove the risk of losing funds.

## What do 1×, 10×, 30× and 35× apply to?

The multiplier tells you how many times the specified wagering basis must be covered by qualifying stakes. On a 100 USD basis, 1× requires 100 USD of credited wagering, 10× requires 1,000 USD, 30× requires 3,000 USD and 35× requires 3,500 USD.

The same multiplier can produce very different targets. First identify the **wagering basis** in the terms: the bonus, the deposit or both.

| Wagering basis | Hypothetical starting amounts | Calculation at 35× | Credited wagering target |
|---|---|---|---:|
| Bonus only | Deposit 100 USD; bonus 100 USD | 100 × 35 | 3,500 USD |
| Deposit only | Deposit 100 USD; bonus 100 USD | 100 × 35 | 3,500 USD |
| Bonus and deposit | Deposit 100 USD; bonus 100 USD | (100 + 100) × 35 | 7,000 USD |

The first two targets match only because the deposit and bonus are equal. Deposit-only wagering is not inherently easier than bonus-only wagering: the amounts and other restrictions matter.

> **Great Britain has a regional 10× limit**
>
> The Gambling Commission (UKGC), Great Britain’s gambling regulator, introduced a maximum bonus wagering multiplier of 10× for operators it licenses in Great Britain, effective from 19 January 2026. This is not a worldwide rule. Game contribution still matters: even at 10×, a low contribution rate increases the actual turnover needed to meet the credited target.

The rule is set out in the [UKGC announcement on safer and simpler gambling promotions](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/news/article/gambling-promotions-to-be-safer-and-simpler), updated on 24 July 2025, with the changes effective from 19 January 2026. The meaning of wagering requirements and the effect of game weighting are discussed in the [UKGC guidance on limiting wagering requirements](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/guidance/the-2023-money-laundering-and-terrorist-financing-risks-within-the-british/proposal-1-ban-or-limit-the-use-of-wagering-requirements), updated on 27 January 2026.

## How does game contribution change the turnover needed?

Game contribution is the proportion of a qualifying stake credited towards the wagering requirement. At 20% contribution, a 10 USD stake earns only 2 USD of wagering credit.

For each qualifying stake:

**Stake × game contribution as a decimal = credited wagering.**

To find the actual turnover needed at a constant contribution rate, divide the remaining credited target by that rate:

| Hypothetical situation | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---:|
| 10 USD stake at 20% contribution | 10 × 0.2 | 2 USD credited wagering |
| 3,500 USD target at 20% contribution | 3,500 ÷ 0.2 | 17,500 USD actual turnover |
| 1,400 USD already credited towards 3,500 USD | 3,500 − 1,400 | 2,100 USD remaining |
| Remaining 2,100 USD at 20% contribution | 2,100 ÷ 0.2 | 10,500 USD further actual turnover |

These rates are illustrative, not standard rates for particular games. If you use several permitted games, add the results of “stake × contribution” for each. Do not assume every stake counts in full.

A game with 0% contribution does not advance the target. That does not necessarily mean it is allowed: the terms may prohibit playing it with an active bonus rather than merely exclude its stakes from wagering credit.

## How are different bonus types calculated?

The terms determine the wagering basis, not the name of the bonus. In particular, distinguish the bonus principal from nominal free-spin stakes and actual free-spin winnings.

| Offer type | What to check |
|---|---|
| Deposit match | The percentage of the actual deposit and the bonus award cap. A 100% match on a 100 USD deposit gives a 100 USD bonus unless the cap reduces it. |
| Fixed or no-deposit bonus | The stated bonus amount and the basis to which the multiplier applies. No deposit does not mean no wagering. |
| Free spins | Use actual winnings if the terms require those winnings to be wagered. Winnings of 24 USD at 10× create a target of 24 × 10 = 240 USD, not the number of spins × their stake. |
| Cashback | It may be cash or bonus funds. Check whether wagering applies and which amount can be withdrawn. |

**0×, 1× and no-deposit offers are different.** At 0×, there is no additional wagering requirement for the specified bonus component or its winnings. At 1×, a positive requirement remains. Qualifying own-money bets, identity checks and payout restrictions may still apply. See the [guide to no-wagering bonuses](https://toolsgambling.com/blog/no-wagering-requirements) for these distinctions.

For sportsbook offers, check qualifying odds, when bets count as settled, and the treatment of void bets and cashout. The casino RTP calculation cannot price a sportsbook offer: its conditions and underlying calculations are different.

## Which restrictions matter besides the multiplier?

Compare permitted stakes, payout restrictions, expiry and balance rules as well as the multiplier. A low requirement can still come with conditions that materially affect the available balance or your ability to complete wagering.

| Condition | What to establish before activation |
|---|---|
| Maximum bet | The permitted stake per round and how feature purchases or other paid options are treated. This is not a maximum payout. |
| Bonus max cashout cap | The maximum payout allowed under the bonus terms and which part of the balance it covers. |
| Ordinary withdrawal limits | Separate limits on withdrawal amounts or processing. These do not replace a bonus payout cap. |
| Games and features | Which games are permitted, their contribution rates, and whether particular features or purchases are excluded. |
| Expiry | The event that starts the deadline, the exact end time and the applicable time zone. |
| Balance spending order | Whether cash or bonus funds are used first and how this affects the remaining balance. |
| Bonus principal | Whether the bonus amount itself can become withdrawable or only associated winnings can. |
| Eligibility | Country, age, payment method, participation restrictions and identity verification, or KYC. |

A non-cashable bonus has principal that cannot be withdrawn; account for this separately from winnings. In a hypothetical final balance of 150 USD containing 100 USD of non-cashable bonus principal, removing that principal leaves 50 USD **before other conditions apply**. This is neither a promised payout nor a universal balance calculation.

Cancelling a bonus may forfeit the bonus and associated pending winnings, and may affect funds used to participate. Do not assume cancellation safely unlocks your money: ask official support about the consequences first.

For UKGC-licensed operators in Great Britain, deposit balances and winnings from deposited funds must not be subject to promotional wagering requirements. Withdrawal remains subject to general obligations, including applicable checks. This is a regional protection, not a rule for every casino: see the [UKGC guidance dated 28 May 2024](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/licensees-and-businesses/guide/page/restrictions-on-withdrawing-deposit-and-deposit-winnings).

## What can RTP tell you about the cost?

RTP, or return to player, can estimate expected loss on fixed turnover in a simplified model. It does not tell you the probability of winning, completing wagering or receiving a particular payout.

With an assumed constant RTP of 96%, the model’s house edge is 4%:

**Actual turnover × (100% − RTP) = expected loss.**

Assume a cashable 100 USD bonus, 100% game contribution and completion of all the specified turnover.

| Hypothetical requirement | Actual turnover | Expected loss | Expected value (EV) proxy |
|---|---:|---:|---:|
| 35× on a 100 USD bonus | 3,500 USD | 3,500 × 4% = 140 USD | 100 − 140 = −40 USD |
| 35× on a 100 USD bonus plus 100 USD deposit | 7,000 USD | 7,000 × 4% = 280 USD | 100 − 280 = −180 USD |

The proxy subtracts expected loss from the bonus amount. Your deposit is your own money, not additional bonus value, so it is not added to the bonus in that calculation.

This proxy is **not a withdrawable balance, a net session result or an expected payout**. It assumes sufficient funds to complete the fixed turnover without stopping because the balance runs out. It also excludes payout caps, fees, non-cashable principal and complex balance rules. Even a positive proxy does not guarantee profit or completion.

A lower house edge does not settle the comparison. For the same credited target of 3,500 USD:

| Hypothetical category | RTP | Game contribution | Actual turnover | Expected loss |
|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| Slots | 96% | 100% | 3,500 USD | 140 USD |
| Table game | 99.5% | 10% | 35,000 USD | 175 USD |

This is a generic comparison, not a claim about particular games or a recommendation to play them. In the second example, lower contribution outweighs the benefit of higher RTP.

RTP is a long-run average, and individual sessions can differ substantially. Fluctuations in wins and losses can exhaust your balance before the target is reached. The [UKGC explanation of RTP, dated 16 June 2021](https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/public-and-players/guide/return-to-player-how-much-gaming-machines-payout), explains that distinction. The [RTP catalogue](https://toolsgambling.com/rtp) can help you find stated values, but check the operator’s particular game version and bonus eligibility separately: the catalogue does not certify either.

## How do you repeat the calculator example?

To reproduce this hypothetical example, enter a 100 USD deposit, a 100% bonus, 35× wagering on the bonus and slots with 96% RTP. The results are a 3,500 USD credited target, 140 USD expected loss and a −40 USD EV proxy.

The quoted labels below are controls in the English interface:

1. Select **“Deposit Bonus”** as the bonus type.
2. Enter **100** in **“Deposit Amount”**.
3. Enter **100** in **“Bonus Percentage”**.
4. Enter **35** in **“Wagering Requirement (x)”**.
5. Set **“Wagering Basis”** to **“Bonus”**.
6. Set **“Game Type”** to **“Slots”**. This category defaults to **100% contribution**; there is no separate input for an arbitrary contribution rate.
7. Leave the **“Slot RTP (%)”** slider at its **96%** preset.
8. Enter **5** in **“Max Bet Limit ($)”**.
9. Expand **“Advanced Options”** and set **“Max Cashout (0 = no limit)”** to **0**. In this model, zero means no payout cap, not a zero payout.
10. Leave **“Sticky Bonus”** set to **“No”**, meaning the non-cashable bonus setting is off.
11. Enter **30** in **“Wagering Deadline (days)”** and **1** in **“Your Bet Per Spin”**.

Local English interface check using the hypothetical example. The advanced panel is collapsed in this image; expand it to set the payout cap and deadline. This is not a production account test or a check of a real promotion.

> **Check the calculation against the offer terms**
>
> Copy the basis and multiplier from the saved terms, then check the target and assumptions. A category’s default contribution does not replace the casino’s rules. If the actual contribution differs, calculate turnover manually: remaining credited wagering ÷ contribution as a decimal.

For these settings, the results are:

| Measure | Value and interpretation |
|---|---|
| Required credited wagering | 3,500 USD |
| Expected loss | 140 USD, assuming all turnover is completed at a constant 96% RTP |
| Bonus value result | −40 USD; a simplified EV proxy, not an exact value or withdrawable balance |
| Number of spins | 3,500 at a 1 USD stake and 100% contribution |
| Active time | 5.8 hours at the assumed 600 rounds per hour, rounded for display |

![English calculator results showing 3,500 USD wagering, 140 USD expected loss and a −40 USD value proxy](https://toolsgambling.com/media/article/2026/10/ddd4e401445905066d214631e1f348be.webp)

Local English result for the same hypothetical example. These are model outputs, not actual losses, withdrawable funds or the outcome of testing a real bonus.

The 5.8 hours estimate is active playing time, not calendar time or a recommended pace. The 30-day deadline and 5 USD maximum bet are example settings, not reasons to play faster or increase stakes.

The calculation has important limitations:

- The calculator’s displayed percentage is a heuristic estimate, not a validated completion probability or a Monte Carlo simulation result.
- The sticky bonus switch does not change the computed numerical result. Do not use it to establish how much you can withdraw.
- Clamping a calculated mean to a payout cap is not the same as calculating the true expected payout after capping each possible outcome.
- Free-spin mode uses nominal spin value. If the terms require wagering actual winnings, use fixed-bonus mode with the actual eligible winnings to check turnover. This checks the requirement; it does not establish exact free-spin EV.
- The calculator does not connect to a casino account, track its actual progress or withdraw funds.

## How should you check progress and withdrawal readiness?

Save the terms before activation, reconcile credited stakes while the bonus is active, and check the withdrawable balance after completion. The calculator does not replace the operator’s counter or the offer’s payout conditions.

**Before activation:**

- Save the offer, its version and the terms.
- Record the wagering basis, multiplier, permitted games’ contribution, maximum bet and payout cap.
- Confirm the deadline’s starting event, end time and time zone, balance spending order and whether the bonus principal is cashable.
- Check age, country and payment eligibility, plus KYC requirements.

Expiry is offer-specific. For example, [Betfair’s casino promotion FAQs](https://support.betfair.com/app/answers/detail/casino-promotion-faqs/) document a seven-day default; that is a named operator example, not a general casino rule. Check the specific promotion’s terms for its deadline and the consequences of cancellation.

**While the bonus is active:**

- Compare progress with the sum of “qualifying stake × contribution”, not all stakes or payouts.
- Allow for unsettled rounds and manual processing that may delay updates.
- If the figures are unclear, save the game details, stake amounts, times and bonus ledger records. Contact official support rather than placing extra bets to test the counter.

> **An optional manual bonus tracker**
>
> You can use [Bonus Portfolio](https://toolsgambling.com/casino/bonus-portfolio) to record individual offers’ terms and progress manually. It has no live casino integration and does not automatically verify balances. These records do not establish a combined actual expected value for your bonuses.

**Before requesting a withdrawal:**

- Check that the operator’s counter confirms completion.
- Look at the withdrawable balance separately from the total balance and bonus funds.
- Check the payout cap, KYC status, eligible payment method and ordinary withdrawal conditions.

Completing wagering does not itself guarantee automatic payment. Checks required by the terms and processing of the withdrawal request may remain.

> **Do not chase an expiring bonus**
>
> Do not add deposits or speed up play just to meet a bonus deadline. If the requirement does not fit your budget or a comfortable timeframe, do not try to preserve the offer at any cost. Ask support about the consequences before cancelling.

Only participate if you meet local age and legal requirements. Set a fixed entertainment budget you can afford to lose, and decline a bonus whose restrictions do not suit you. Wagering is a turnover obligation, not a way to secure an income.

## FAQ

### Do I need to deposit the full wagering amount?

No. A wagering requirement concerns qualifying stakes, not new deposits. Winnings can be staked again where the terms allow it. However, your balance may run out before you complete the requirement.

### Why does my wagering counter differ from my total stakes?

Possible reasons include game contribution below 100%, an excluded game or feature, unsettled rounds or processing delays. Save the game details, stakes, times and bonus balance records, then contact official support. You do not need to place extra bets to test the counter.

### Can I cancel a bonus and withdraw my deposit immediately?

That depends on the terms and jurisdiction. Cancellation may forfeit the bonus and associated pending winnings, and may affect funds used to participate. Ask support about the consequences first. For UKGC-licensed operators in Great Britain, deposit balances must not be subject to promotional wagering requirements, although general withdrawal obligations still apply.

### Does the calculator show my probability of completing wagering?

No. Its displayed percentage is a heuristic estimate, not a validated probability or Monte Carlo simulation result. Expected loss calculated for fixed turnover does not establish the probability of completing wagering or the amount you can withdraw.
