Understanding Poker Staking
What is poker staking?
Staking is when a backer pays for a player's tournament buy-ins in exchange for a percentage of the profits. It reduces the player's risk and gives backers investment opportunities.
What is markup?
Markup is when a player sells action at a premium. 1.1 markup means investors pay $1.10 for every $1 of action. Good players with proven results can justify markup.
What is makeup?
Makeup is accumulated losses the player must pay back before receiving profit splits. If a player loses $1,000, they're"in makeup"and must profit $1,000 before seeing splits.
What's a fair staking deal?
Common splits are 50/50 for unproven players, 60/40 or 70/30 for proven winners. With makeup, players often get higher percentages (60-80%) since they bear more risk.
