Big Six Wheel: Rules, Payouts and House Edge

How the Big Six Wheel Works: Mount Airy Rules Explained

Contents

In Big Six Wheel, you bet on a symbol and win if the pointer stops within a wheel segment bearing that symbol. This guide covers the Mount Airy Casino Resort Table Game Guide approved December 21, 2023, printed pages 35–36: 54 equal wheel segments and seven bet spots. On this version, the bet marked 5 has the lowest house edge, at 11.11%.

The calculations use the dated Mount Airy guide, not verification of a current table. They explicitly assume that each of the 54 equally sized wheel segments is equally likely to win.

How a round works and what “X to 1” means

You place a stake on one or more bet spots, and a winning payout of X to 1 means X units of profit per unit staked, plus the returned winning stake.

Under the December 2023 guide:

  1. Place your stakes on the chosen bet spots before betting closes.
  2. The dealer closes betting and spins the wheel through at least three rotations.
  3. The pointer’s position within a wheel segment determines the winning symbol.
  4. If the pointer stops outside a wheel segment, the spin is void and the wheel is spun again.

The numbers 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 identify bet spots, not required stake sizes. You can, for example, stake 10 units on the bet spot marked 5.

At 5 to 1, that winning 10-unit stake earns 50 units of profit. Its total return is 60 units: 50 in profit plus the original 10-unit stake.

Seven-bet payout table

The bet marked 5 has the lowest house edge, 11.11%, while the bet marked 1 hits most often, 42.59%. A higher hit probability does not necessarily mean a better return.

The Mount Airy guide specifies 52 numbered wheel segments, one Joker and one Mount Airy logo, for 54 total. The segment counts and profit odds below come from that guide; the calculated percentages and expected losses are rounded to two decimal places using exact fractions.

How to calculate probability, RTP and expected loss

Hit probability measures how often a bet wins; RTP measures the theoretical share of wager turnover returned, including winning stakes. House edge is the remaining share, so it must be calculated separately for each bet type.

For this wheel, use:

  • Hit probability: p = n / 54, where n is the number of wheel segments bearing the chosen symbol.
  • RTP: p × (X + 1), where X is the profit payout ratio and +1 accounts for the returned winning stake.
  • House edge: 1 − RTP.
  • Expected loss: turnover × house edge.

For a 10-unit stake on 5, assuming all 54 equal wheel segments are equally likely:

  • The hit probability is 8/54, or 14.81%.
  • A win earns 50 units of profit, with a total return of 60.
  • A loss costs 10 units.

The expected net result is:

(8/54) × 50 − (46/54) × 10 = −10/9 ≈ −1.11 units

That gives an RTP of 88.89% and a house edge of 11.11%, rounded to two decimal places. The calculation uses the exact fractions, not the rounded percentages.

Expected loss is a long-run mathematical model applied to wager turnover, not a forecast for an individual session. Turnover means the sum of all stakes placed, including money wagered again after a win. See the house edge guide for the general method.

What happens when you bet on two symbols?

Two bets can increase the chance that one bet hits, but the net round result must subtract both stakes from the total return. Consider 10 units on 1 and 10 units on 5: total round stakes are 20 units.

OutcomeWheel segmentsTotal return, including winning stakeNet round result
1 hits232020 − 20 = 0
5 hits86060 − 20 = +40
Any other symbol hits2300 − 20 = −20

If 1 hits, its 10-unit stake returns 20 units, but the 10-unit stake on 5 loses. The round therefore breaks even.

The probability that either bet hits is:

(23 + 8) / 54 = 31/54 = 57.41%

However, a positive net round result occurs only when 5 hits, with probability 8/54, or 14.81%. Having a winning bet is not the same as having a profitable round.

The expected net result is:

(23/54) × 0 + (8/54) × 40 − (23/54) × 20 = −70/27 ≈ −2.59 units

This is the expected loss on 20 units of turnover, giving a weighted house edge of 12.96%. The weighting depends on the amount wagered on each bet type, not merely the number of symbols selected. These figures use the same equal-likelihood assumption and round the final results to two decimal places.

How to check expected loss in the calculator

The ToolsGambling house edge calculator calculates expected loss from a manually supplied house edge. It does not count Big Six wheel segments or offer a Big Six preset, so first determine the edge from the applicable payout table.

To reproduce the example for bet 5:

  1. Enable the custom house edge checkbox.
  2. Enter 11.11% in the house edge input.
  3. Set the bet size to 10.
  4. Select the mode based on rounds.
  5. Enter 100 rounds.

These inputs give 1,000 units of turnover and approximately 111.10 units of expected loss. That output uses the manually entered, rounded edge of 11.11%. Using the exact edge of 1/9 instead gives 1000/9 ≈ 111.11 units; the difference comes from rounding the input.

Round speed is unnecessary for this example because it uses rounds rather than time. The result is a model, not an observed outcome or a prediction that you will lose that amount over 100 rounds.

Can you use this table for another Big Six Wheel?

No—check the wheel layout and payout table against the Mount Airy rules approved December 21, 2023 first. The name Big Six Wheel alone does not establish the odds or house edge.

Use this checklist:

  • Confirm 54 equally sized segments.
  • For 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, Joker and logo, confirm segment counts of 23/15/8/4/2/1/1, respectively.
  • In that same order, confirm profit payouts of 1/2/5/10/20/45/45 to 1.
  • Treat Joker and logo as separate symbols and betting options; check each payout separately.

If any detail differs, recalculate the probabilities and expected losses rather than applying this table.

A different format with a 24/15/7 distribution and 40-to-1 payouts exists, but its figures cannot be combined with this Mount Airy table. Bonus money-wheel games are separate games, too.

The Pennsylvania rules corroborate this segment distribution but specify minimum payouts; they are not a substitute for the exact payouts in the dated Mount Airy guide.

Takeaway: Under the Mount Airy rules approved December 21, 2023, bet 5 has the lowest house edge at 11.11%, while bet 1 hits most often. Neither guarantees profit. Apply these calculations only when the wheel layout and paytable match this documented version. Changing staking patterns or bankroll size cannot change the mathematical probability of the next spin or turn a negative expected return positive.
