Futures Bets: Timing, Returns and Settlement Rules

How a Tournament-Winner Futures Bet Is Settled

Contents

A futures (long-term) bet is a bet on an outcome decided at the end of a tournament or season, such as the tournament winner. With a stake of 100 at decimal odds of 6.00, a win returns 600 (net +500), a loss means −100, and a void returns the stake of 100 (net 0).

A futures bet becomes valid once acceptance is confirmed and it appears in your bet history. It then remains pending until the official outcome or a refund required by the rules. In the market covered here, your selection wins the trophy and your bet wins; another selection wins the trophy and your bet loses, unless a void applies.

This guide uses one documented example: BetMGM UK Sports Rules, version 1.1 dated September 23, 2026, golf §20.6, “Tournament Futures Winner,” accessed October 16, 2026. These are one operator’s rules for the UK jurisdiction and the specified market, not universal rules for all futures bets. The basis is the bet acceptance and settlement rules, §§2.1–2.4 and §20.6.

What Are You Selecting in a Futures Bet?

You are selecting the tournament winner, not the winner of an individual match or round. In this example, the fixed-odds bet is settled according to which player or team receives the trophy.

“Futures” describes a bet awaiting a future outcome; it does not impose a minimum number of days. Here, it means a sportsbook betting market, not a financial futures contract.

Keep two things separate: the displayed quote for a new bet and the accepted odds on your ticket. Until your bet is accepted, the displayed quote does not establish the terms of your bet.

How Does a Bet Move from Acceptance to Settlement?

A bet passes through five stages: displayed quote, acceptance, pending status, official result and settlement. Seeing odds on the screen is not the same as receiving confirmation that the bet was accepted.

  1. Before acceptance. You see decimal odds of 6.00 and enter a stake of 100 units. Under §1.5, the quote may change before acceptance; changed terms require your confirmation.
  2. Acceptance. The bet becomes valid when acceptance is confirmed and it appears in your bet history (§§2.1–2.3). In this example, the accepted odds are 6.00.
  3. Pending. The ticket remains open. News or a new market quote does not, by itself, determine its result.
  4. Official trophy winner. Settlement of this market depends on who receives the trophy, subject to the tournament’s special rules.
  5. Settlement. The applicable branch is applied to the ticket: win, loss or void with a refund.

For illustration, use these fictional dates: acceptance on November 1, 2026 at 12:00 UTC, and the trophy winner determined on December 2, 2026 at 18:00 UTC. The interval is 750 hours, or 31 days 6 hours. This is only an example timeline, not a rule-defined settlement period or an allowable tournament delay.

What Leads to a Win, Loss or Refund?

Settlement depends on more than who receives the trophy: player participation, whether the tournament takes place and special market conditions also matter. Under §5.1, the special golf rules take priority over general rules.

The table applies golf §§20.3–20.6 and §20.10, plus the event cancellation rule in §5.2. Every amount refers to the same ticket: a 100-unit stake at accepted decimal odds of 6.00.

These rules have important qualifications:

  • A delay does not mean an immediate refund. Under §20.3, pending bets stand during the first 48 hours of a delay before a round or a suspension. If that period is exceeded, they are canceled and stakes are refunded. This is not a limit on how long a futures bet can remain pending overall.
  • Once participation begins, the bet generally stands. Under §20.5, a player teeing off on the first hole is enough. For this market, §20.6 separately requires participation in the first round; a later withdrawal does not, by itself, trigger a refund.
  • An unfinished final round has a separate condition. If all participants have started the fourth round but the final 18 holes are not completed, bets placed after the third round are void with stake refunds (§20.6).
  • The Outright Winner rule has a withdrawal condition. Under §20.10, a player who withdraws after at least three holes is treated as a loser, unless the player did not participate at all after the bet was placed.
  • A later result change does not always change settlement. Under §20.1, the governing body’s official result is used. Later amendments or disqualifications are disregarded, except for a correction of an error in the result announced within 24 hours after settlement; a winning bet can then become a losing one.

Under §4.1, a void bet is settled at decimal odds of 1.00. For this ticket, that means a 100-unit refund and a net result of 0, not a win or a loss.

What Are the Total Return and Net Profit?

If the bet wins, the total return is 600 units: 500 in net profit plus the 100-unit stake returned with the winnings.

For a ticket with a 100-unit stake at decimal odds of 6.00:

  • Win: 100 × 6.00 = 600 total return; 600 − 100 = +500 net profit.
  • Loss: total return 0, net result −100.
  • Void with a refund: stake refund 100, net result 0.

These calculations assume the stated stake and accepted odds; they do not promise a payout regardless of the rules. The ticket’s settlement outcome must be determined before the corresponding calculation is applied.

The implied probability is 1 / 6.00 × 100 = 16.67%, rounded to two decimal places. This is a mathematical conversion of the odds, not a forecast or an established true probability of winning.

Why Can New Quotes Change While Accepted Odds Stay the Same?

A new quote applies to a new bet, while the accepted odds on an existing ticket are part of that bet’s agreed terms. Later market movement does not, by itself, rewrite the accepted odds of 6.00.

Before acceptance, §1.5 allows a quote to change with the account holder’s confirmation. After acceptance, §§2.1–2.3 preserve the agreed terms and validity of a bet accepted without error.

This is not an unconditional guarantee that the terms can never change: §2.4 and §3 provide exceptions for errors, including incorrect odds, and allow corrected settlement, cancellation or voiding with a refund. Express cancellation and refund rules also continue to apply.

Later quotes may move because of results, changes to the field, injuries and news, betting flow, and risk management. These are general market mechanisms, not the operator’s disclosed pricing formula.

How Can You Check the Arithmetic in ToolsGambling?

The ToolsGambling odds converter can reproduce the total return, net profit and implied probability, but it cannot determine how the ticket should be settled.

  1. Select the decimal odds format.
  2. Enter odds of 6.00.
  3. Enter a stake of 100.
  4. Check the results: “Total return” 600, “Profit” +500, implied probability 16.67%.

Three cropped parts of the ToolsGambling odds converter: the 600 total return includes the winning 100 stake, while the +500 profit excludes it.

The return and profit calculations assume the ticket wins at the entered terms. The calculator cannot interpret tournament rules or grade the market as a win, loss or void with a refund. Implied probability is rounded to two decimal places. For an explanation of the format itself, read how betting odds work.

What Should You Check Before Placing the Bet?

Check not only the odds, but also the participation requirements, refund conditions and official settlement rules.

  • Make sure you have selected the tournament-winner market.
  • Read the rules for pre-start withdrawals and first-round participation.
  • Check the conditions for delays, cancellation and changes to the number of rounds.
  • Distinguish the displayed quote from the odds that will be accepted.
  • After placing the bet, check for acceptance confirmation and its appearance in your bet history.
  • Do not confuse the 600-unit total return with 500 units in net profit, or treat a refund as a win.

Frequently Asked Questions

Under §2.2 of the cited rules, a bet remains valid and cannot be withdrawn once you have confirmed it, unless it was accepted in error. Early settlement (cash out), if the operator offers it, is a separate offer at the current price, not a bettor's right, and changes your financial result compared with waiting for final settlement.
