Player Didn't Play: When Is a Bet Void?

When Is a Player Prop Bet Void?

Contents

To check an accepted ticket, establish four things: the exact market, the player participation threshold, the event's status after any postponement and the bet type. If the participation condition is not met, the market rule may make the bet void and return the stake on a single. A brief appearance may instead make the bet stand—but only where any participation is enough. An injury report, an “out” designation or a place on the bench does not, by itself, prove that your bet should be void.

How to check your accepted ticket

Start with the terms of your accepted bet, not news about the player. Check your ticket in this order:

  1. Identify the exact market. Check the statistic, selected line and settlement period. For example, a player points total is not a game total or a combination of several statistics. The guide to alternative player totals explains the distinction between the statistic and the selected line.
  2. Find the participation condition. Does the player need to make any appearance, be in the starting line-up or perform a specific action? Being named in the squad does not satisfy those conditions.
  3. Check the event's status. If the match was postponed, first establish whether the bet stands under the operator's time window. Only if it stands should you check participation in the match actually played.
  4. Confirm the bet type. A single, an ordinary parlay and a same-game parlay may have different settlement rules. One void leg does not necessarily mean the entire stake is returned.

The diagram gives the order of checks; the market rule determines the bet's status.

Four situations that can change settlement

What matters is whether the player met the specific market's participation condition and whether the bet survived any postponement—not simply whether the player started. The examples below follow football rules; in other sports, the participation threshold is set by that sport's own rules.

The player did not participate at all

A single is void and its stake returned for complete non-participation if the applicable market rule provides for that outcome. First confirm non-participation using the official match record, rather than relying only on a pre-match report.

For football markets covered by Betfair's Players Not Starting rule, complete non-participation makes an eligible single void and returns its stake. This is not a universal rule for every market: combined goalscorer-and-correct-score or goalscorer-and-match-winner bets have separate conditions. The general bet365 US rule for bets on a named player also provides for no action when the player does not participate, subject to the specific sport and market rules. For a straight bet, the stake is returned. Source: bet365 US Non Runners (help.bet365.com, “Non Runners FAQ”), checked October 16, 2026.

The player made a brief appearance

A brief appearance does not automatically entitle you to a refund. Where any participation is enough, the bet stands and is settled on the recorded result or stat line.

Betfair counts a player as a runner if they had any opportunity to fulfil the bet, regardless of how long they played. For football's Anytime Scorer market, entering the game at any point during the 90 minutes plus stoppage time counts as participation; extra time does not count. Even a brief appearance can therefore result in a losing bet if the selected outcome does not occur. If the player appears and is then injured, the bet is generally settled on the result; only an explicitly applicable separate rule can change that. The player did not start but appeared later

A substitute appearance satisfies an any-participation condition, but it does not satisfy a must-start condition. The same appearance can therefore lead to different settlement outcomes for two bets on the same player.

Under Betfair's Football Rules, Player Passes requires the player to start, while Goalscorer Match Bets requires both players to start. By contrast, Anytime Scorer allows an appearance during the match. These market-specific boundaries are covered by the football rules linked above, checked October 16, 2026.

The match was postponed

After a postponement, first check whether the event bet stands, then check player participation. Postponement alone means neither an automatic refund nor automatic survival of the ticket.

Under Betfair's postponed-football rule, bets can stand if the match is played on the current or following three calendar days and confirmation of the rescheduled start time is received within three hours of the original kick-off time. Outside that window, bets whose outcomes have not already been determined are void. This is not a simple “72-hour rule.” Source: Betfair postponed football rules (support.betfair.com, “Football - Postponed or Abandoned Match Rules”, a_id 10240), checked October 16, 2026.

Checking event survival first and participation second is an editorial application of two separate rules, not a direct quotation from the operator. Do not apply Betfair's time window to another operator's ticket.

How much does a void single return?

When an ordinary cash single is void, your stake is returned and your net result is zero. A returned stake is not a winning payout.

Every row below uses a 100-unit stake at decimal odds of 2.00. The example assumes no bonuses, commission, taxes or rounding adjustments; all amounts are exact under those assumptions.

SituationGross returnNet result
Player did not participate and the market rule makes the bet void1000
Participation condition met; selected outcome wins200+100
Participation condition met; selected outcome loses0−100

For a winning bet, the gross return includes your original 100: 100 × 2.00 = 200. Net profit is 200 − 100 = 100. See the guide to betting odds for more on the difference between these amounts.

How is an ordinary parlay recalculated?

In an ordinary parlay, a void leg may be removed while the remaining legs continue to count. That does not produce a separate refund of the full stake while the rest of the ticket remains active.

Under bet365 US Bet Types, an ordinary parlay with a no-action selection is settled on the remaining selections. Same Game Parlays have their own settlement rules, as bet365 US states separately. Source: bet365 US Bet Types (help.bet365.com, “How are different types of bets settled?”), checked October 16, 2026. Betfair, by contrast, voids the leg involving the player in Multis and Bet Builders, reprices the bet, and leaves all other selections standing. Check the rules for the specific product you are using.

For an ordinary parlay with a 100-unit stake:

  • Before the void: 2.00 × 1.80 × 1.50 = 5.40. The potential gross return is 540, for a net profit of +440 if all three legs win.
  • After the 2.00 leg is void: 1.80 × 1.50 = 2.70.
  • If both remaining legs win, the gross return is 270 and the net result is +170.
  • If either remaining leg loses, the gross return is 0 and the net result is −100.

In the parlay calculator, enter the remaining decimal odds of 1.80 and 1.50, with a stake of 100. The arithmetic check gives combined odds of 2.70 and a gross return of 270.

Parlay calculator with a 100 stake: odds 5.40 before the void and 2.70 after removing the 2.00 leg

The calculator verifies arithmetic after removal, but neither decides whether a leg is void nor models a same-game parlay.

What to save when checking settlement

Save evidence that connects your accepted ticket to the applicable rule and the player's actual participation. This gives you a clear basis for requesting an explanation, but it does not guarantee a settlement change.

  1. Your accepted ticket: save its number, exact market name, statistic, settlement period, odds, stake and bet type.
  2. The exact rule and its date: save the link and a screenshot of the text, including the participation condition and exceptions. Record when you checked it; if the dispute concerns an earlier version, ask which version was applied.
  3. The official line-up and participation record: establish separately whether the player started and whether they actually appeared. If the market requires a specific action, save the relevant statistic from the official record.
  4. The postponement announcement: save the original start time, rescheduled date and the time that date was confirmed, where relevant to the operator's rule.
  5. A settlement screenshot: capture the selection's status, gross return and remaining parlay legs.
  6. Your support reference number: ask support to identify the rule clause applied and explain the settlement of your specific ticket. Save the response with the reference number.

The central question is: which condition of the accepted market was met—or not met—and what official record proves it?
