How the Asian Handicap Middle Between −1 and +3 Works

Contents

Both bets win only when the goal difference is greater than 1 and less than 3: exactly two goals in Team A’s favour. This overlap is a middle. With illustrative bets on A −1 and B +3 at decimal odds of 1.90 and stakes of 100 units each, the combined net result is +180 at a two-goal margin. At the edges—one or three goals—one bet wins and the other pushes, giving +90. Outside those margins, at a goal difference of ≤0 or ≥4, the pair loses 10 units.

All teams, lines, odds and stakes here are hypothetical. This is an arithmetic example, not an observed or available bet365 quote. Both bets cover the same fixture and the same period: 90 minutes plus stoppage time.

How are the tickets and combined net result calculated?

Define d = Team A’s goals − Team B’s goals after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. For the A ticket, the adjusted margin is d − 1; for the B ticket, it is −d + 3. A positive adjusted margin wins, zero pushes, and a negative margin loses.

Under bet365’s Asian Handicap rules, an exact tie after applying a whole-goal handicap results in a push. Thus, A −1 pushes at d=1, while B +3 pushes at d=3. A push on one ticket does not mean both stakes are refunded.

A winning ticket has a gross return of 100 × 1.90 = 190 and a net profit of +90. A push returns the 100-unit stake, with zero net profit. A losing ticket returns nothing and has a net result of −100.

Formula:

Combined net result =
gross return from A + gross return from B − 200
dA −1B +3A net profitB net profitCombined net resultTotal gross return
−1LossWin−100+90−10190
0LossWin−100+90−10190
1PushWin0+90+90290
2WinWin+90+90+180380
3WinPush+900+90290
4WinLoss+90−100−10190
5WinLoss+90−100−10190

All amounts are in illustrative units; negative values indicate losses. No rounding is required in this example. The calculation excludes possible external costs and settlement exceptions.

How can you check each ticket in the calculator?

Use the ToolsGambling Asian handicap calculator to settle each ticket separately, then add the two net profits yourself. The tool does not accept two lines at once or calculate the combined net result.

To check a 2:0 score, assign Team A as the home side and Team B as the away side:

  1. Select the home side. Enter handicap −1, decimal odds 1.90, stake 100, and final home and away goals of 2 and 0. The result is a win with net profit of +90.
  2. Separately, select the away side. Enter handicap +3, decimal odds 1.90, stake 100, and the same 2:0 score. The result is a win with net profit of +90.
  3. Add the two ticket profits yourself: +90 from each ticket gives a combined profit of +180.

To check the boundaries, change the final goals: at 1:0, A pushes and B wins, for a pair net profit of +90; at 3:0, A wins and B pushes, for +90; at 4:0, A wins and B loses, for −10. The interface’s score grid is limited to eight goals for each team.

The calculator does not detect a middle or determine outcome probabilities or expected value. It also does not verify market availability or whether a particular ticket complies with bet365’s rules.

Why is this middle not arbitrage?

This pair is not arbitrage because its combined net result is −10 outside the middle and its push edges. Arbitrage requires a positive combined net result at every modeled outcome, based on the actual accepted stakes and odds and matching settlement rules. See the arbitrage betting calculator guide for the distinction.

A hedge changes the exposure of an existing position but can still leave a loss. A hedge can also create a middle; the terms are not interchangeable. The hedge bet calculator guide explains this difference.

Without verified outcome probabilities, this pair’s expected value cannot be assessed. Having an outcome where both tickets win does not, by itself, make the pair economically attractive.

Which rules and variations matter?

This example applies only to two opposing pre-match Asian handicap bets covering the normal period of a football match. Under bet365’s 90-minute rule, ordinary match markets include stoppage time but exclude extra time and penalty shootouts unless otherwise specified.

Other variations require separate calculations:

  • Totals: opposing bets at different totals lines can also create a middle, but settlement depends on total goals rather than the teams’ goal difference.
  • Half-goal handicaps: there is no push from an exact tie after applying the handicap.
  • In-play Asian handicap: bet365 counts goals scored after the bet is placed. This is not the same calculation as the pre-match pair.
  • Separately labeled extra-time Asian handicap: only goals scored during extra time count.

The in-play and extra-time distinctions are set out in bet365’s Asian Handicap rules.

These public rules pages were checked on 2026-10-15 and do not show publication dates. For a real ticket, check the accepted bet slip, the rules for your jurisdiction, and the applicable void and abandonment provisions. The hypothetical lines in this example do not establish that the bookmaker offers them.

Frequently Asked Questions

The two-ticket outcome table, including the +180 profit, no longer applies: it assumes both accepted bets stand. Recalculate the combined result from the surviving ticket and the actual settlement terms for both bets. Void handling is not universal.
