What does each Asian handicap mean?

The most common lines and exactly how each one settles. This is the plain-language version of the numbers people search for most.

LineTypeWhat it means
-0.25QuarterYour team must win. A draw loses half your stake, a defeat loses it all.
-0.5HalfYour team must win. A draw or defeat loses the whole stake, no push.
-0.75QuarterWin by two or more for a full win. Win by exactly one and you half-win.
-1WholeWin by two or more to win. Win by exactly one and the stake is refunded.
+0.5HalfWin or draw and you win. Only a defeat loses.
+1.5HalfWins unless your team loses by two or more goals.
+1.75QuarterLose by two and you half-lose. Lose by one, draw or win and you win.
+3.5HalfWins unless your team loses by four or more goals.

How the settlement works

Every result on this page comes from one number, the margin, and the line's fractional part.

The margin

margin = (your goals − their goals) + line

Add the handicap to your team's goal difference. A positive margin means the bet is covered.

Whole line (.0)

margin > 0 win · = 0 push · < 0 lose

Whole lines can push. When the adjusted result is a draw, the stake is refunded.

Half line (.5)

margin > 0 win · else lose

Half lines never push. The margin can never land exactly on zero.

Quarter line (.25 / .75)

half stake on each adjacent line

The stake splits across the two nearest lines, so a quarter can half-win or half-lose.

The complete guide

Asian handicap betting, settled properly

Asian handicaps remove the draw and hand out a head start, which makes the odds fairer but the settlement trickier. Quarter lines split, whole lines push, and totals work the same way. As of 2026 this ToolsGambling calculator settles all of them, and it does something the read-only competitors do not: it shows every scoreline at once and tells you whether the price is fair.

What is an Asian handicap?

An Asian handicap gives one team a virtual head start or deficit in goals, then settles the bet on the adjusted result. Its whole purpose is to remove the draw, turning a three-way market into a near 50-50 two-way bet at close to even money.

Back the favourite at -1 and they must win by two or more. Back the underdog at +1 and they win the bet unless they lose by two or more. The line is chosen so both sides sit near a coin flip, which is why Asian odds hover around 1.90 to 2.00.

The term was coined in 1998 and the format spread from Indonesian bookmakers worldwide. Today it is the default way sharp bettors back football, because a fair line with a thin margin beats a padded three-way price.

The first time a -0.75 bet landed me a half-win I thought the bookmaker had made a mistake. It had not. Quarter lines split your stake in two, and once you see the split written out it stops being mysterious. That is exactly what the grid and split panel above do.

The three line types

Every Asian line is a whole, a half or a quarter, and the fractional part is all you need to know how it settles.

Whole lines settle with a push

Lines like -1, 0 or +2 can refund your stake. When the handicap makes the adjusted score a draw, the bet is void and you get your money back.

Half lines never push

Lines like -0.5 or +1.5 always win or lose. Because the margin carries a half, it can never land exactly on zero, so there is no refund.

Quarter lines split your stake

Lines like -0.25 or +0.75 put half your money on the nearest whole line and half on the nearest half line. That is why you can end a bet half-won or half-lost.

How quarter lines work

A quarter line is really two bets. A -0.25 line splits into a 0 line and a -0.5 line, each carrying half your stake. If your team draws, the 0 half is refunded and the -0.5 half loses, so you lose a quarter of your total stake. That is a half-lose.

The same logic runs the other way. A +0.75 underdog line splits into +0.5 and +1. Lose by one goal and the +1 half is refunded while the +0.5 half loses, leaving you half-down. The calculator writes both halves out so you never have to guess.

Asian totals (Over/Under)

Asian totals settle with the exact same maths. Over 2.5 needs three or more goals. Over 2.25 is a quarter, so it splits into Over 2.0 and Over 2.5. With two goals the Over 2.0 half is refunded and the Over 2.5 half loses, a half-lose. The Totals tab above handles whole, half and quarter total lines the same way it handles handicaps.

Why bet Asian handicaps?

Three reasons sharp bettors prefer Asian lines to the three-way market.

Lower margin

A two-way Asian market usually carries a thinner bookmaker margin than a three-way win-draw-win price, so more of the money stays with you over time.

No dead draws

The draw is removed. Your money is on a clean two-way outcome, and with quarter lines you get a partial refund instead of a total loss on close results.

Flexible risk

Quarter lines let you fine-tune risk in quarter-goal steps, something the three-way market cannot offer. You choose exactly how much cushion to buy.

How to use the Asian handicap calculator on ToolsGambling

On the Handicap tab, pick your side and line, add the odds and stake, then enter the final score. The result shows instantly, and quarter lines expand to show both halves. Scroll to the score grid to see how every plausible scoreline would settle. Switch to the Totals tab for Over/Under lines, or the Value tab to strip the vig and check the fair price. Every scenario has a shareable link and a free embed.

Common Asian handicap mistakes

Three errors trip up newcomers to Asian lines more than any others.

Confusing quarter and half lines

1.75 and 2 are not the same bet. A quarter splits and can half-win; a whole can push. Read the fraction before you stake.

Forgetting whole lines push

On a -1 line a one-goal win is not a loss, it is a refund. People write off bets that actually returned their stake.

Ignoring the fair price

Two books can price the same line very differently. Compare both sides, strip the vig, and take the better number. The Value tab does this for you.

Asian handicap terms

Push

A void result on a whole line where your stake is returned.

Bet responsibly

An Asian handicap changes the shape of a bet, not the fact that the bookmaker holds an edge. Only stake what you can afford to lose and take a break if it stops being fun. Free, confidential help is at BeGambleAware.org.

FAQ

Asian handicap calculator FAQ

A +1.5 handicap gives your team a 1.5-goal head start. The bet wins unless your team loses by two or more goals. It is a half line, so it never pushes: you either win or lose the whole stake.
A +3.5 handicap adds 3.5 goals to your team. The bet wins unless your team loses by four or more. Like all half lines it cannot push, and it is used to back heavy underdogs with a big cushion.
A 1.75 line is a quarter handicap. It splits your stake across 1.5 and 2.0. On a -1.75 favourite, a two-goal win half-wins and a three-goal win wins in full. On a +1.75 underdog, losing by two half-loses.
A +0.25 line splits your stake between 0 and +0.5. Your team winning or drawing wins the bet. A defeat loses it all, but on the level-ball half a draw refunds part of your stake, so a draw is a half-win.
A quarter line (.25 or .75) puts half your stake on the nearest whole line and half on the nearest half line. Each half settles on its own, which is why you can end up half-winning or half-losing. The calculator writes both halves out.
Whole lines (-1, 0, +2) can push and refund your stake on an adjusted draw. Half lines (-0.5, +1.5) always win or lose. Quarter lines (-0.25, +0.75) split your stake and can half-win or half-lose.
Yes, on whole lines. If the handicap makes the adjusted score a draw, the bet is void and your stake is returned. Half lines never refund, and quarter lines can refund half your stake.
Asian totals settle like handicaps on the goal count. Over 2.5 needs three goals. Over 2.25 is a quarter and splits into Over 2.0 and Over 2.5, so two goals gives a half-loss. Use the Totals tab to settle any of them.
