Over under betting is a wager on whether both teams' combined points, goals or runs finish above or below a number the sportsbook posts; who wins does not matter. Over wins when the combined score is higher than the line and Under when it is lower; on a whole-number line an exact hit is a push and the stake comes back, while a half-point line cannot push. At -110 a $110 stake wins $100, and you break even only by winning 52.38% of the bets that settle.
This guide covers the main game total. Quarter lines such as 2.25 and 2.75 are settled in the Asian totals guide and player lines in the Alt Points guide; overtime, innings and periods are set by the market for each sport.
As one operator's 2024 example, DraftKings rules version 8.1.24 of 1 Aug 2024, a copy published by the Massachusetts regulator, say bets are “declared void” when the total equals the line, illustrating this with a 128.0 line and a 64-64 result: DraftKings Betting Rules 8.1.24, Total Points/Goals/Runs, pp. 7–8 (copy on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission site, 1 Aug 2024). The refund wording is explicit on p. 32: for Over 2 with exactly two goals, “the stake is returned”. The general rules of the basketball and American football sections include overtime and apply push rules in two-way markets unless otherwise stated (pp. 41 and 53); the soccer section uses regular time including stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties unless indicated (p. 28).
How to read the line and the price
The line sets the scoring threshold, while the price determines the payout. In Over 224.5 at -110, 224.5 is the line and -110 is the price in American odds. On a bet slip, you may see Over 224.5, o224.5 or OV 224.5 for the over, and Under 224.5, u224.5 or UN 224.5 for the under.
To find the total, add both teams' scores for the settlement period specified by the market. If one team scores 118 and the other scores 106, the total is 224.
The scale of the line differs by sport, whether the score is measured in points, goals or runs. For the basic terminology, see the Over/Under glossary entry.
A price of -110 means staking $110 to earn $100 in net profit. Its decimal representation is 1.9091, rounded to 1.91; that rounding matters when calculating money. See how odds formats work for the difference between these displays.
When a bet wins, pushes or loses
Over wins above the line, Under wins below it, and an exact hit on a whole-number line pushes in the two-way market used here. A half-point line cannot equal a whole-number final score.
Each cell is the net profit or loss of a $110 bet at -110 on either side; a push returns the $110 stake, so the result is $0.
| Bet | Total 223 | Total 224 | Total 225 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 224.5 | -$110 | -$110 | +$100 |
| Under 224.5 | +$100 | +$100 | -$110 |
| Over 224 | -$110 | push, $0 | +$100 |
| Under 224 | +$100 | push, $0 | -$110 |
Step-by-step diagram: teams score 118 and 106, total 224; Over 224 is a push, Over 224.5 loses, Under 224.5 winsTeaching diagram, not a bookmaker screen. Observation: 118 + 106 = 224. Conditional example at -110 with a 110 stake: a 224 line pushes, while a 224.5 line loses for Over and wins for Under.
Moving the line from 224 to 224.5 changes settlement only at a total of 224: Over changes from a push to a loss, while Under changes from a push to a win.
The outcomes mirror each other, but the money does not. Staking $110 on each side at -110 produces a combined -$10 when one wins and the other loses, or $0 when both push.
Do not confuse this with a three-way total that lists the exact number as a separate outcome. BettingUSA, bettingusa.com, describes that as a different market: an exact hit makes both Over and Under lose rather than push.
What a total pays
At -110, a winning bet earns net profit = stake × 10/11. The payout is the stake plus that profit; a loss pays $0, while a push pays back the original stake.
| Stake | Net profit on a win | Payout including stake |
|---|---|---|
| $11 | $10 | $21 |
| $55 | $50 | $105 |
| $110 | $100 | $210 |
| $220 | $200 | $420 |
So “winning $100 from a $110 bet” means $100 in net profit. The amount returned to the account is $210, including the money originally staked.
What -110 costs and the win rate you need
At -110, the break-even win rate is 52.38% of settled bets: 110 / (110 + 100). Here, settled bets means wins and losses, excluding pushes. The key assumption is the price: -105 requires 51.22%, -115 requires 53.49%, and -120 requires 54.55%.
An exact break-even example is 11 wins out of 21 settled bets: 11 × $100 covers 10 × $110. Pushes do not change this threshold; they only reduce how many bets end in a win or a loss.
The table holds the target profit at $100 per win and changes the required stake with the price. Percentages are rounded as shown; the wins-out-of-100 column uses whole wins sufficient for a non-negative result.
| Price | Stake for $100 profit | Break-even | Wins out of 100 to stay non-negative | 10 wins and 10 losses in 20 bets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -105 | $105 | 51.22% | 52 | -$50 |
| -110 | $110 | 52.38% | 53 | -$100 |
| -115 | $115 | 53.49% | 54 | -$150 |
| -120 | $120 | 54.55% | 55 | -$200 |
| +100 | $100 | 50.00% | 50 | $0 |
At a -110 price and a 50% win rate among settled bets, the average result is minus $5 per $110 stake. Breaking even requires 52.38%, or 11 wins out of 21 settled bets. This is a conditional calculation, not a forecast.
For a shorter example, 20 settled bets of $110 produce -$100 with 10 wins and 10 losses, or +$110 with 11 wins and 9 losses.
Overround and expected loss measure different things. At -110/-110, the booksum—the sum of implied probabilities—is 104.76%, giving an overround of 4.76 percentage points. At a 50% win rate, the expected loss is 4.55% of the stake. The former measures how far the implied probabilities exceed 100%; the latter measures the expected monetary loss relative to the stake at that win rate.
What changes when the two prices differ
Different prices change each side's payout and break-even win rate without necessarily changing the line. At a line of 224.5, Over -115 requires $115 for $100 net profit, while Under -105 requires $105 for the same profit.
| Measure | Over 224.5 (-115) | Under 224.5 (-105) |
|---|---|---|
| Break-even | 53.49% | 51.22% |
| No-vig estimate (proportional) | 51.08% | 48.92% |
| No-vig odds | 1.96 | 2.04 |
The proportional method removes the margin by dividing each side's implied probability by their sum. These no-vig estimates depend on the method; they are not the true probabilities of the outcomes.
For -115/-105, the booksum is 104.71% and the overround is 4.71 percentage points. For -110/-110, they are 104.76% and 4.76 percentage points, with proportional no-vig estimates of 50.00% / 50.00% and no-vig odds of 2.00 for each side. The individual thresholds change, but the pair's overround remains almost the same.
To reproduce this in the implied probability calculator:
- Select “American” and the “Two-way market” preset.
- Enter -110 and -110. “Booksum” shows 104.76%, “Margin” shows 4.76%, and “Fair (no-vig)” shows 50.00% for each side. Each side's implied probability is 52.38%.
- Replace the prices with -115 and -105. “Booksum” becomes 104.71%, “Margin” shows 4.71%, and “Fair (no-vig)” shows 51.08% and 48.92%. The implied probabilities are 53.49% and 51.22%.
“Margin” is the interface label for the excess above 100%; in the prose here, that difference is expressed in percentage points. The default de-vig method is “Multiplicative” (the proportional method described above).
Covers, covers.com, updated 25 Aug 2025, explains that a sportsbook can adjust the two prices as money comes in on one side. It also lists weather, line-ups, injuries, schedule and betting volume as factors affecting the line. FOX Sports, foxsports.com, updated 3 Dec 2025, names news and heavy betting. For the calculation, the distinction is simple: a line change alters which totals win; a price change alters the payout and required win rate.
How to check the settlement in the calculator
You can check both a push and a win in the Asian handicap calculator using the “Totals (O/U)” tab. The block is titled “Asian total (Over/Under)”, but whole-number and half-point lines settle as ordinary totals here. In Russian-language interfaces, ТБ / ТМ corresponds to Over / Under.
The “Goals scored” field accepts 0 to 30, so it cannot take 224. Although its label refers to goals, the comparison is sport-neutral. Use this smaller scale: line 224 maps to 6, totals 223/224/225 map to 5/6/7, and line 224.5 maps to 6.5. This preserves the above/equal/below comparison, not the original score.
To check the whole-number line:
- Select “Over”.
- Enter 6 in “Total line”; the tag shows “whole line”.
- Enter 6 in “Goals scored”.
- Enter 1.9091 in “Odds” and 110 in “Stake”.
Use 1.9091 to reproduce the displayed example at the supplied precision. Entering the rounded decimal price 1.91 instead makes a winning $110 stake pay $210.10 rather than $210; that difference comes from rounding the odds, not from a different settlement rule.
ToolsGambling calculator, Totals (O/U) tab: Over selected, total line 6, goals scored 6, odds 1.9091, stake 110; outcome Push, payout 110, profit 0Screenshot of the ToolsGambling calculator (production site, 17 Oct 2026). On screen: Push and a payout of 110. The Goals scored field is labeled for goals and accepts 0 to 30, so the check uses a small scale: line 224 maps to 6 and 224.5 to 6.5.
In “Result”, “Outcome” shows “Push”, “Payout” shows $110, and “Profit” shows +$0. “Push” is the interface status for the refund.
Keep the other inputs unchanged and check the neighbouring totals:
- Change “Goals scored” to 7: “Outcome” shows “Win”, with a $210 payout and +$100 profit.
- Change it to 5: “Outcome” shows “Lose”, with a $0 payout.
- Change “Total line” to 6.5; its tag shows “half line”. With 6 in “Goals scored”, the outcome is “Lose”; with 7, it is “Win”. There is no push.
- To check the opposite side, select “Under”, return “Total line” to 6 and enter 5 in “Goals scored”: the outcome is “Win”, with a $210 payout.
Frequently Asked Questions
The combined score must reach at least 225 for the bet to win. A total of 224 loses.
On a whole-number line, an exact match is a push: your stake is returned with no net profit, as specified in the market rules. A half-point line cannot push.
Often yes, unless the market rules say otherwise. As one operator’s example, DraftKings’ 2024 rules, version 8.1.24, include overtime by default in the general rules for basketball (p. 41) and American football (p. 53), while soccer (p. 28) uses regular time including stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties unless otherwise indicated. Check the settlement period in your own market’s rules before betting.
Net profit is the stake × 10/11. A $110 winning stake earns $100 net profit, with a $210 payout including the stake.
A sportsbook can adjust either price without changing the line. Different prices mean different payouts and break-even win rates, not proven probabilities.
