Casino Hand Pay: Payout Steps, ID and Tax Withholding

What Is a Hand Pay at a US Casino?

Contents

A hand pay is a payout processed by casino staff rather than an ordinary printed-ticket redemption. If a slot machine displays HAND PAY or CALL ATTENDANT, stay nearby, leave the machine alone and use its service button or contact casino staff. This guide covers land-based casinos in the United States, including the different tax treatment of US tax residents and international visitors.

A jackpot is a prize; a hand pay is a payout procedure. They are not interchangeable. Staff may also handle a smaller technical short pay or a payout of cancelled credits. These situations appear in Nevada’s slot internal-control standards, but that older operational document does not establish current federal tax thresholds.

How does a hand pay differ from an ordinary ticket?

A hand pay involves staff verification and paperwork, while an ordinary ticket lets you redeem an available balance through the casino’s supported channels. Self-pay is a separate, property-specific arrangement that can let eligible players process certain payouts without the usual staff visit for each win.

TITO means ticket-in/ticket-out: the machine prints a redeemable voucher. Neither the voucher’s total nor the fact that staff handle a payout automatically determines its tax reporting treatment.

The MGM details come from its official Quick-Pay terms. They should not be applied to every casino or every machine.

What is the W-2G reporting threshold in 2026?

For payments in 2026, the W-2G reporting threshold is $2,000 for slots and bingo without subtracting the wager, and $2,000 for keno after subtracting the winning wager. The change applies from January 1, 2026—not March 2025. Slots do not have an additional “300 times the wager” test. See the January 2026 W-2G instructions and 2026 IRS reporting table.

This is a payer’s reporting obligation, not a tax-free allowance or a universal machine-lockup limit. Property procedures, technical limits and state requirements may differ.

Individual resultAmount tested against the thresholdMeets the 2026 W-2G threshold?
Slot win of $1,999.99$1,999.99No
Slot win of $2,000 on a $10 wager$2,000; do not subtract the wagerYes
Keno win of $2,100 on a $150 winning wager$2,100 − $150 = $1,950No

The second example has an economic gain of $1,990, but the slot reporting amount is $2,000. These are individual results, not total printed-ticket balances. Amounts retain the stated precision; they are not rounded across the reporting boundary.

What should you do when the machine requests a hand pay?

Call staff, wait for verification and keep the payout information and documents. Follow these steps:

  1. Stay near the machine. Do not open it, attempt repairs or interfere with its operation.
  2. Contact staff. Press the service button if one is available, or speak to a casino floor employee.
  3. Record the machine number, time and displayed amount. Photograph the screen only if property rules allow it. Avoid photographing other guests or their documents.
  4. Present original identification and accurate tax information. For reportable W-2G winnings, IRS rules generally require two forms of identification, at least one with a photo. A signed W-9 may serve as the nonphoto identification. Your taxpayer identification number, or TIN—such as an SSN or ITIN—is separate from photo identification. Foreign recipients have separate documentation rules; not every visitor must have an SSN. See the IRS payee identification requirements.
  5. Read the paperwork before signing. Check your name, win amount, date, game and withholding. Count cash received; for a check or another payment method, confirm how and when you can access the funds.
  6. Keep copies and ask how tax forms will arrive. Find out whether the form is issued immediately, sent later or delivered through another agreed method.

If you do not have acceptable identification, ask a supervisor how to document your claim and which documents you can provide. There is no universal hold deadline that you can safely assume applies at every casino.

Never supply a fabricated SSN or ask another person to claim your win. Missing a correct TIN and missing photo ID are different issues: the former can trigger backup withholding, while the latter requires a separate identification solution.

What should you check on a W-2G?

Check the reported winnings, date, game and federal withholding first, then your identification details. If something is wrong, ask the casino or other payer to correct it rather than editing the issued form yourself.

The January 2026 W-2G form includes these fields:

BoxWhat to check
1Reported winnings
2Date won
3Type of wager or game
4Federal income tax withheld
9Winner’s TIN
11 and 12Identification details
15State income tax withheld
17Local income tax withheld

The form records information for tax reporting. Box 1 is not necessarily your economic profit, and box 4 is not your final annual tax bill.

How much federal tax is withheld from a hand pay?

For a US tax resident with a correct TIN, an ordinary slot win does not automatically trigger 24% federal withholding simply because it exceeds $5,000. Slots, bingo and keno are excluded from that regular withholding rule. Reportable slot winnings without a correct TIN are instead subject to 24% backup withholding. See the IRS W-2G withholding instructions.

A nonresident alien generally faces 30% withholding on gross gambling proceeds, unless an applicable exemption changes the treatment. Foreign-person reporting generally uses Forms 1042 and 1042-S rather than W-2G. This discussion assumes income that is not effectively connected with a US trade or business; the relevant exceptions depend on the circumstances. See IRS Publication 515 on foreign recipients.

Example: a $6,000 slot win on a $10 wager

The same win can produce different amounts paid after withholding because of tax status and documentation. These are three separate hypothetical recipients, not options a winner can freely choose.

Recipient and assumptionsReporting amountFederal withholdingPayment after that withholding
US tax resident with a correct TIN$6,000 on W-2G$0 regular mandatory withholding$6,000
US tax resident without a correct TIN; payer does not subtract the wager for backup withholding$6,000 on W-2G24% backup withholding: $1,440$4,560
Nonresident alien; assume taxable gross proceeds of $6,000 and a 30% rate$6,000 for 1042-S reporting$1,800$4,200

These examples exclude state and local taxes, voluntary withholding, treaty relief and business-income exceptions. No additional rounding is applied. The economic gain before tax is $5,990—the $6,000 win minus the $10 wager—but that is distinct from the reporting amount and is not an annual tax calculation.

The backup-withholding row explicitly assumes no wager subtraction. Under the IRS instructions, the payer may instead reduce the withholding base by the wager. In that case, $5,990 × 24% = $1,437.60, leaving $4,562.40. Do not treat the table’s $1,440 as mandatory regardless of the payer’s permitted calculation.

Tax residency is not determined by language or citizenship alone. Visitors from Russia should not rely on the former gambling treaty exemption: its operation for this income has been suspended since August 16, 2024, as explained in Publication 515. Relief under another treaty, and the documentation required through Form W-8BEN, must be checked for the particular recipient. Game-specific exemptions cannot automatically be transferred to slots.

Withholding is money taken from the payment at that moment. Final tax is determined separately for the year and may differ. Zero withholding does not mean zero tax, and 30% withholding does not settle every possible annual obligation of an international visitor.

What records should you keep after the payout?

Keep actual records of your gambling and payout, because US gambling winnings are taxable even below the W-2G reporting threshold. The IRS recommends an accurate gambling diary and supporting documents.

Record dates, locations, games, winnings and gambling losses. Retain receipts, tax forms and casino statements. A tool’s modeled expected loss is not proof of actual gambling losses and cannot replace these records.

For 2026, a qualifying itemized deduction for eligible documented gambling losses is limited to the smaller of 90% of those losses or gambling winnings, under the 2026 IRS changes. This does not automatically make every loss deductible. See the separate guide to gambling-loss deductions for more detail; this article does not calculate a complete federal or state tax return.

How long does a hand pay take, and should you tip?

There is no universal hand pay waiting time. Staffing, identity verification and the prize’s payment terms all affect the process. Ask the attendant what happens next rather than assuming a guaranteed 10–20-minute turnaround.

Cash, checks or account credits depend on the property’s rules. For a large progressive jackpot, confirm whether the prize offers a lump sum, installments or another specified arrangement; do not assume any particular option is available.

Tipping is voluntary, with no mandatory percentage, and it does not change game outcomes. If you receive a large cash payout, avoid publicizing it and ask security whether an escort is available.

How does MGM Rewards Quick-Pay work?

MGM Rewards Quick-Pay lets eligible participants process certain wins on selected machines, but enrollment must be arranged each day through a slot representative. The official MGM program page describes the process:

  1. Contact a slot representative and confirm the program’s availability at that property.
  2. Confirm that you meet its US citizen or resident eligibility requirements.
  3. Have your players card, PIN and photo ID ready, and sign the agreement.
  4. Enroll again each day you want to use the program.
  5. Use eligible machines for qualifying payouts in the advertised $2,000–$49,999 range, subject to property terms.

Winnings first become machine credits. Cashing out prints a ticket, and W-2G forms are issued at the end of the day. You cannot request that taxes be deducted through Quick-Pay.

The players card identifies you for program participation; it does not control slot outcomes. Quick-Pay is not a tax loophole and does not guarantee eligibility for foreign tourists.

What if there is a payout dispute or malfunction?

Ask for a written explanation of the disputed payout and speak to a supervisor. Preserve the machine number, time, displayed amount and any documents provided. Take photographs only within the casino’s privacy and photography rules.

Do not assume that every malfunction automatically voids every displayed win. Equally, a displayed amount alone does not guarantee the outcome of a dispute: the circumstances and records need review.

In Nevada, gambling-dispute assistance is available around the clock at 702-486-3340 through the Nevada gaming regulator. Other states and jurisdictions have their own authorities. Contacting a regulator does not guarantee a decision in your favor.

Why is chasing hand pays not a strategy?

A hand pay is a payment procedure, not a way to make gambling profitable. RTP describes theoretical long-run return relative to wagering turnover; it does not establish the probability of crossing a hand pay threshold. Volatility describes variation in outcomes and also does not supply that probability by itself.

Larger bets increase turnover and expected cost under the same model, without guaranteeing profit. Denomination is the value of one credit, not the total bet. The slot denomination guide explains that distinction separately.

How to reproduce the expected-loss example

The house edge calculator can reproduce expected loss under specified assumptions, but it cannot calculate hand pay probability or taxes. Use these actual interface controls:

  1. Use Enter a custom house edge to set 4% rather than selecting an average preset.
  2. Set Bet Size per Round to $2.
  3. Under Session Length, select By hours.
  4. Set Hours Played to 2.
  5. Set Rounds per Hour to 500.
  6. Set Sessions per Week to 1.
  7. Read Your Results, including Expected Loss.

With those inputs, the model gives:

ResultValue
Rounds1,000
Wagering turnover$2,000
Expected loss$80
Expected return$1,920

The expected-loss formula is $2 × 500 × 2 × 0.04 = $80. A $4 bet with the other inputs unchanged produces $160 in expected loss.

Here, 4% is a manually specified house edge, equivalent to 96% RTP in this model—not a verified characteristic of a particular game. Monetary results are shown in whole dollars. The $80 is a mathematical expectation, not a prediction of your actual loss; the $1,920 is modeled expected return, not a promised payment. The calculation provides no jackpot frequency, hand pay probability or tax estimate.

English house edge calculator results showing 1,000 rounds, 2,000 dollars in turnover and 80 dollars in expected loss

Results screenshot from the local English interface on localhost, using a 4% house edge, a $2 bet, two hours and 500 rounds per hour. The configuration inputs are not shown in this crop. This is not production-site verification or a forecast of actual play.

As an optional input check, the game RTP directory can help you verify the precise game version and its provider-reported RTP. A category average is not a substitute for that check, and knowing RTP still does not predict a hand pay.

How is an online win different?

An online win is usually credited to an account balance, while receiving the money involves a separate withdrawal request and identity verification. That is not the land-based US hand pay process described here.

Online payment methods, verification requirements and processing terms depend on the operator and jurisdiction. The steps for calling an attendant at a physical slot machine should not be treated as a universal US online withdrawal procedure.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Declining your copy does not remove the casino’s reporting obligation when the win meets the rules. A missing form does not make winnings tax-free either. Give accurate information and ask how to obtain your copy. See the IRS W-2G instructions.

Tell the payer about the actual shared ownership before the paperwork is prepared and ask about Form 5754. It supplies information about the real recipients so the payer can prepare W-2G forms. It is not a way to substitute someone else as the winner. See the IRS instructions for shared winnings.

For slots, the threshold applies to an individual win, not the total voucher or accumulated balance. In 2026, it is $2,000 without subtracting the wager. A ticket total alone does not establish whether a W-2G is required. See the IRS reporting rules.

Ask a supervisor how to document your payout claim and which documents the casino accepts. Do not assume a universal deadline for holding the win. A signed W-9 may serve as nonphoto identification under the rules, but it does not automatically replace the required photo ID. See the IRS identification requirements.

No. An online balance credit, identity verification and withdrawal request are a different process. This guide covers hand pays at land-based US casinos, not a universal US online withdrawal procedure.
